If you or someone you love is addicted to drugs or alcohol, finding the right treatment program can be a real challenge. This is especially the case if the individual suffering from addiction has already participated in one or more treatment programs, but has not been able to achieve long-term sobriety. Often, the problem is not with the addiction treatment program itself, but with the local environment that surrounds the patient both during and after rehab. Fortunately, there is a simple way to change this; traveling to attend a rehab far away from home.
Should I Travel for Drug Rehab?
Deciding whether or not to travel for drug rehab is a personal decision, so those considering traveling for treatment should consider a variety of factors before making a final choice. First, however, let’s look at some of the downsides of attending a rehab near your home.
Attending a drug rehabilitation center near your home may make it much harder to stay sober after finishing the program. This is because multiple negative influences, such as a network of addicted friends and family members, drug dealers, and suppliers exist, and even if you are extremely careful, you are likely to run into a few of them after your stay in rehab. Even if you do not see any of these individuals, simply experiencing a taste, smell, feeling or location that your brain has associated with drug or alcohol use may make it more likely for you to relapse. While you cannot necessarily control whether or not you experience any of these sensations, you are much less likely to do so if you stay away from your hometown during and for a period after your treatment.
Traveling for Rehab Allows You to Start Fresh
No matter who you are or what specific addictions you have suffered from, rehab is all about creating a new beginning for yourself and your life. While it’s true that you can remake your life, your thoughts, and your decision-making process from anywhere in the world, it can be much harder to do so when you are continually exposed to the same environment in which you used to abuse drugs and/or alcohol.
Therefore, while there are a lot of practical reasons to travel for rehab, the biggest may be psychological, and simply the feel of a new location may be enough to help many individuals feel more inspired and committed to their sobriety.
